A minimum of 13 people killed and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite censure from critics regarding the speed and management of the country's key government projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The president stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the year before. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The construction of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that administration.

However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's accident was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier collision this month when a train hit a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Appeals for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party called for an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all similar projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive independent investigation. The party emphasized that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been running in total compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national projects.
