The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Obtain the Job That Changed My Life

During the late 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to the European continent with a travel partner. Because my companion was considering starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had arranged a two-week stay there en route to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large 10-storey building on the UWS called International House. After dropping our bags, we went directly to the dining hall, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been conducting research with electron microscopy.

He pointed out that there was an electron microscope unit at Columbia University – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I ought to seek a position with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, more critically, I didn’t have a US visa.

The next day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that night. The man from Iraq approached me and informed me that he had arranged an interview for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had gone to the trouble, I went to the meeting – but immediately explained to my prospective employer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

In typical New York fashion – a place where opportunities abound – she declared: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I never got on that flight to London.

I worked there for 36 months. An advantage of the role was that I got no-cost classes at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

I lost touch with him and I can't recall his name, but his incredible act of kindness altered my destiny in multiple respects. I didn't possess the confidence or nerve to approach someone at an prestigious college and ask for a job. And, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that tuition waiver.

What's more, that role at the university resulted in a position in Switzerland where I encountered my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
