Users Coming Off Weight-Loss Medications Gain Back Pounds Far More Rapidly Than Those on Conventional Diets

Obesity treatment involves long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that patients who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.

Research printed in a major medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users using these drugs must be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a return to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Analyzing Therapies

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

Scientists note that individuals who shed pounds through dieting typically see a slower weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Understanding the Fast Rebound

Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the injections accounts for the accelerated regain.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls hunger.

"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Stopping of this medication means hunger is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities recommend the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This perspective is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a intense resurgence of appetite.

"It was like a switch that goes on and you're instantly ravenous," recalled one woman.

This challenge is worsened if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
