Wimbledon Introduces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing video review systems.

Replay systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to question particular decisions made by the chair umpire, echoing the system already in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

The new system will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This move comes just a season following the AELTC implemented ELC, which brought an end to the longstanding role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to request the official to re-examine other situations, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body during play.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there is no cap on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled the player was responsible for hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further change at The Championships this year will be the introduction of graphical cues on displays to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
